HP Pavilion X2 – Sleek and easily taken on the go
HP Pavilion X2
HP Pavilion X2 is a fantastic device, sleek and small, easily taken on the go. It can work great as a tablet or for surfing the web. This hybrid which the keyboard can easily be detached from the display is made entirely of plastic and is quite sturdy, beside the fact that it can flex a little from its back. Not a single area would you find metal. To turn this small laptop into a tablet, just hold and pull out the display. When in laptop mode, these two parts are held together firmly by means of two black plastic tabs which also prevents them from wobbling.
Pavilion X2 is quite small and measures 10.39 x 6.81 x 0.78 inches which is thinner and lighter than many others in the market. The overall weight is only 1.12 kg with the keyboard attached which makes it extremely portable particularly when you compare it with others of the same category. It is in fact considered one of the lightest in the market.
The only feature that stand out in the design is its sharp appearance. The screen tapers slightly at the top making it thicker where it links with the keyboard and slimmer at the top. Despite the fact that the screen can be completely removed, instead of having the screen flip 360 degrees like in some 2-in1 models, the Pavilion X2 can be placed backward offering the same opportunity of making sort of a tent with the keyboard acting like a stand. This is great for watching movies while the laptop is placed on top of a desk.
The screen measures 10.1 inch and has a touch screen display of 1280 x 800 which compared to competitors is average. Nevertheless, it does provide quite good image and colors. When the brightness is measures, it registers 264 nits which is above average. Pavilion X2 display offers very good brightness for outdoors or in direct sunlight. A color range of 68% sRBG spectrum indicate that it does not include all but most of the colors that can be found on the internet.
Being very small in size, for the keyboard to be able to fit in such dimension, the size of the keys had to be reduced, actually half the size of that which would be found on a full size keyboard. Because of this fact, typing for some people can be quite a challenge. It is not uncommon to commit many typos or even to have your regular typing speed reduced. Measuring 3.75 x 1.75 the touchpad, what the touchpad lacks in height, it makes up in width. It feels quite smooth and is responsive enough.
Pavilion X2 has Bang & Olufen tuned speakers included. The stereo system is found right in front of the laptop. The sound is fantastic and although not very loud. By adding sound exterior sound enhancements, you can have some great music that would be danced at even at a disco. When it comes to generating heat, the Pavilion X2 does not seem to get too hot even though there are no fans.
The Pavilion X2 uses Windows 10 for operating system which is the most recent Window of Microsoft. With regards to connectivity, it includes two types of USB. The USB 2.0 and a reversible type C port USB which also doubles to become the power jack. A mini HDMI port is also included for sending content to external display. Obviously like all laptops a headphone/mic jack and a 1280 x 720 HP TrueVision Webcam which is front facing and great for taking selfies or for social media. The pictures on the camera are not great but can be considered as being average. The colors are vivid yet a little bit more brightness to pictures could have improved the quality. It also supports Bluetooth 4.0 and 802.11 Wi-Fi.
The Pavilion X2 got a 1.44-GHz Intel Atom x5-Z83300 CPU and has only 2GB of RAM and 32 GB of eMMC flash storage. With upgrade it is possible to double the storage capacity to 64GB. It doesn’t seem much but this hybrid would work perfectly fine with 6 to 7 tabs open simultaneously or watching HD videos. Intense multitasking will result in a slowdown of performance. The storage capacity has a file transfer speed of 42.76Mbs, not bad at all on the average. Surprisingly the battery has a lasting power of 9 hours and 30 minute, which is an entire day. At least for spending into a café or a public library without the need to charge it. This hybrid is not quite a gaming machine. It is convenient for browsing and streaming media.
Intel HD graphics combined with a low CPU does not make this a gaming machine. The IPS display allows viewing photos, videos, games, with great clarity and almost at any angle. Trying to play demanding games and even a game such as Warcraft is not possible. It is almost a nice hybrid that can be used on the go to access the internet and for doing simple writing tasks.
Windows 10 is pre-installed and includes a 1 year limited hardware warranty. Specific to the components of Windows 10 is this regards is that it adapts to the two different modes, either laptop mode or tablet mode. When converting to tablet mode, Windows 10 also includes new features particularly for the laptop mode. HP has included quite a fair amount of apps (TripAdvisor, drop box, amazon, etc.) They can be found on the task bar but there are even many more hidden in the start menu. HP also provide apps for connecting in the cloud through HP drive which includes all the major cloud service providers.
Pros & Cons
The design of the HP Pavilion X2 is quite modern looking and holds firmly despite the fact that it seems that it can be easily taken off. One good thing is the battery life. This device could have used more power and the fact that it could take some time for certain person to adapt with the small size keys.
For a budget device, it does not give such an appearance. The Pavilion X2 is sturdy, light and portable. It proves to be resilient against damages.
